Our Story

 The We Sat Down story

One day, we sat down on the brown sofa together and that’s where this blog began....

That was M & Little M – a mother and daughter who both love to read. That was 2012.

This blog began as an exploration of books available to young teens, especially fiction novels. Things had obviously moved on from the days of the Famous Five, Nancy Drew and My Friend Flicka and we didn’t have a clue where to start!  Mixed up in this, the blog became a contemporary record of the books we’d read and our thoughts about them (no more handwritten lists stamped with a date!).

We Sat Down focused on books that teens and adults could share as well as general fiction with a tendency towards the literary. We liked to have fun and so you'll sometimes find silly bookish nonsenses mixed up with some more serious debates too.

We became involved in social events held by publishers, represented Booktrust at a Laureate announcement, held an event at a literary festival and M was on the judging panel for the Hot Key Young Writers Prize 2013. We’ve met many friendly and interesting people. And, dreams can come true because We Sat Down became a social book group, run by Little M.

In 2014, life threw us a horrible curveball and we fell off the planet.

Fast forward to 2016, and We Sat Down is back, although Little M now shares the same shoe size as M and has decided that her STEM A levels are taking priority.

About M

As a teenager, I was the bane of the high school leadership.

I am neither a Miss, Ms, or Mrs.

The sounds of birds singing in the morning, the colour red, crashing waves, cheesecake, guava, books and a good old midnight natter about the likelihood of going wilderness camping or theories we've all forgotten and completely misunderstood, these are some of my favourite things.

For leisure reading, I frequently enjoy contemplative fiction whether it's about power and relationships, language and structure, dystopian/speculative science fiction, feminist fiction or contemporary African fiction.

I also like writing. What a surprise!

About our reviews
We Sat Down’s reviews record personal responses to a book. Our blog mainly chats about teen/young adult and adult fiction (with the occasional 'crossover' middle grade - the sort that makes you laugh and cry). M loves prizes. She really loves prizes. We rarely read crime, paranormal romance, romance or horror.

M is accepting review copies again - but please, only of books you think I'll enjoy.

Fancy a Chat?
We Sat Down loves to chat with authors and anyone involved in the publishing process.  We run a series of interviews. We rarely take part in blog tours unless there’s someone that piques our interest (like a book we’ve loved or an issue/organization that we’re keen to support usually for ethical/moral or super-fun reasons).
